Eligibility:
Candidates who have secured at least 55%(without rounding
off) marks / 50% for i. SC/ST candidates in Masters Degree
examination and ii. For the candidate who have completed
their Ph.D. degree prior to 19.9.91 in the following or
related subjects are eligible for appearing in the Joint
CSIR-UGC test.

Eligibility:
Candidates
who are in the final year of M.Sc. or equivalent examination
can also apply for the test. However, such candidates will be
considered eligible for JRFs/LS only after they have passed
the Masters Degree examination or equivalent with atleast 55%
marks in the relevant or related subject.
(iii) Age
Limit : The upper age limit for admission to the eligibility
test is as under :.
(a) For
Junior Research Fellowship :
28 years
for December / June of the corresponding years exam, relaxable
upto 5 years in case of candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC, physically
handicapped and women applicants.
(b) For lecturership :
Candidates
above 28 years of age are also eligible for appearing in NET
for lecturership only. (No upper age limit).
The test
will consist of two papers :
(i).
Paper I
Paper I
will consist of two sections :
Section
A and Section B
Section
A will consist of 30 questions on general information on science
and its interface with society to test the candidates awareness
of science, aptitude for scientific research and quantitative
reasoning and also a few questions from common elementary computer
science.
Section
B will consist of 70 objective type questions from the subject
area chosen by the candidate. Each question will carry 2 marks. In the subject "Mathematical Sciences"
the candidate will have to attempt any 50 questions out of the given 70 questions in Section B; each carrying 2.8 marks.
Negative
marking will be there for wrong answers.
Paper I
will be of 2 hours 15 minutes duration and will carry maximum
of 200 marks.
(ii).Paper
II
Paper II
will consist of number of questions requiring descriptive answers
(of maximum one page length). The candidate is required to answer
a specific number of questions ranging from 10 to 20 in his/her
opted subject.
The paper
will be of 2 hours and 30 minutes duration and will carry maximum
of 200 marks. The final result will be based on aggregate of
marks secured in both the papers.
A candidate who does not appear in Paper I will not be permitted
to appear in Paper II, i.e., every candidate will have to appear
in both the papers.
Candidates
qualifying for the award of Junior Research Fellowship JRF(NET)
will receive fellowship either from CSIR or UGC as per their
assignment or from the Schemes to which they may find association.
The value
of the fellowship is at present Rs. 12,000/- per month. It will
be governed by terms and conditions of CSIR, UGC or Scheme,
as applicable.
The number
of fellowship for each subject is limited, SC/ST/OBC applicants
will be given such special considerations as may be decided
by the Co-ordination Committee as per policy guidelines.
The duration
of fellowship will be initially for 2 years carrying a monthly
stipend of Rs .12,000/-. On Completion of two years as Junior
Research Fellow(JRF), the stipend of a Fellow may be increased
to Rs. 14,000/-pm for the 3rd year on the basis of assessment
of candidates research progress / achievements through interview
by an Expert Committee; upon such a recommendation a fellow
will be called SRF(NET). In the event of the Committee not recommending
upgradation, the Fellow will continue as JRF(NET) with a stipend
of Rs. 12,000/- per month for the 3rd year or his/her fellowship
may be terminated depending upon the decision of the Committee.The
progress of research work of JRF(NET)/SRF (NET) will be assessed
again at the end of 3rd year following the procedure adopted
at the end of 2nd year. If the work of JRF(NET) is still not
found satisfactory for upgradation, the fellowship will be terminated.The
total tenure as JRF(NET) plus SRF(NET) shall not exceed 5 years.
